Support an Asset: Climate Alliance

The Climate Alliance influences policies affecting climate change!

The Climate Alliance, a prestigious organization, brings together nearly 2,000 member municipalities and districts spanning over 25 European countries. Additionally, it collaborates with various regional governments, NGOs, and other entities, all fervently committed to the battle against climate change. It stands as the largest European city network dedicated to climate action. These members, encompassing small rural towns to densely populated cities, acknowledge that climate change is a global crisis necessitating localized solutions.

Climate Alliance is distinctive in its dual dedication to promoting climate action within European municipalities and supporting indigenous peoples of the Amazon River basin, who have practiced sustainable forestry for generations. This approach harnesses the intimate knowledge of local communities and their deep connection to the environment, making them adept in implementing climate action within their regions. European municipalities often initiate renewable energy projects, energy efficiency programs, and energy conservation efforts, while indigenous communities focus on safeguarding their forests and territorial rights. The Climate Alliance combines ambitious municipal initiatives in Europe with the imperative support of rainforest stewardship by indigenous communities.

Climate Alliance doesn't merely advocate; it is an advocate of real action. Each municipality, city, and district joining this alliance commits to a municipal resolution aimed at continuously reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Their target is a remarkable 95% reduction by 2050 compared to 1990 levels, in line with IPCC recommendations. This commitment underscores their dedication to effective and sustainable climate action in accordance with the Climate Alliance's principles. This network stands out by not only setting targets but also providing clear and actionable recommendations for tangible progress.

As an organization, the Climate Alliance takes a holistic approach to climate action. Its extensive network comprises municipalities and districts from more than 25 European countries, regional governments, NGOs, and other organizations. The focus remains unwavering on local solutions to combat the global challenge of climate change. This commitment is exemplified through Climate Alliance's rich history of promoting climate action both in European municipalities and in partnership with the indigenous peoples of the Amazon River basin, who have a legacy of sustainable forestry practices. The expertise of these local actors in implementing climate solutions is invaluable, whether through renewable energy projects, energy efficiency initiatives, or efforts to conserve energy. Furthermore, they support indigenous communities in safeguarding their forests and territorial rights. Climate Alliance's approach is distinguished by its dual emphasis on ambitious municipal action in Europe and support for rainforest stewardship in the Amazon.

Climate Alliance's inception in 1990 marked a significant milestone. It began with a gathering of 33 institutions, including 12 municipalities from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, along with six indigenous organizations from the Amazon Basin. This meeting in Frankfurt, Germany, was the catalyst for a movement to combat climatic changes. Although rooted in the German-speaking world, the alliance's principles have garnered interest from municipalities across Europe from the very outset. Today, Climate Alliance comprises representatives from almost all EU countries, and it has established National Coordination Offices in six countries to provide support and set the agenda for its members. The National Coordination Offices play a vital role in supporting members in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Luxembourg, and Hungary, further strengthening the alliance's international reach and impact.
